If Wishes Were Horses...

Do you remember the old nursery rhyme...

'If wishes were horses, we'd all ride to the fair'

As a child, did you ever wish to be an animal?  I certainly did.

When I was a little girl growing up in a small town I used to dream of being a bird.  In my front yard we had a tall maple tree.  This tree was where I lived, it was my favorite secret spot!  I could climb my tree and leave the cares of my little world behind.  Up high, in the sky, I could see for miles and miles.

People could be passing beneath me and they would never know I was there.  It was a place where my dreams could flourish.  I wished I could fly and feel the wind beneath my wings.  Soaring up, up, up! Looking at everything from a 'birds eye view'.

Being confined to a wheelchair, has brought some of those childhood wishes back to my mind.  How fun it would be to fly upstairs and visit with the kids in their rooms just before they go to bed.  I've not been able to go upstairs for over 13 years.  Or fly out to the mailbox to get the mail, or even fly to my neighbors house and chat for awhile.

I asked CL what kind of animal he dreamed of being and he said he wanted to be a bird too.  We both laughed at that, because he hates flying...

Did you have a special secret place, as a child, that you liked?

When you were a child, was there an animal you wanted to be?

  1. I used to wish I was a horse so I could run like the wind. My little one still wants to be a bird though. :)

  2. Becky Jane,
This is so funny because I wrote a post yesterday called The Secret Place!! When I was a kid, I used to go to whatever end of the house where nobody was, just so I could read. I would read anything I could get my hands on and slip away to another world for an hour or two. I still love to do that to this day.
You bless me always and I love you!

  3. I always wanted to be a bird too. The idea of soaring was so exciting and, to this day, flying is the only form of travel that I do not have a fear of (yes, that includes cars).

  5. Hrmm, I think I am like Sam on this one. I was always pretending to be something different. I had, and have ;D, a big imagination. I also liked climbing up trees but my little place was my playhouse. My Dad made me the coolest play house. I can still remember him standing on the back of the flat bed truck with a bunch of guys. He had been working on the little house for months at work. I was so excited and stunned. I think I was 4 or 5 but that memory never fades.

  6. This is a really a great post. When I first read your subject line I did think that lots of times wishes are horses as it takes us to places we see in our mind and often they materialize.
I thought of your wish to go upstairs and I thought how wonderful it would be for a company to support you in this wish and supply one of those lifts that fit on stairs for those in wheelchairs.
I never wished I was an animal when I was small nor do I now as an adult however flies come to mind to be on the walls to see reactions to things (:
I had an apple tree I often climbed to be away and when I was a mother I hung out in the chicken shed and the hens and I listened to a radio there. Everyone needs that quiet time even as children.
