Mom's Can't Win

Recently my 4 year old GRANDson was in the store with his Mom.  He accidentally broke a toy.  His mommy said they needed to go back home and get HIS own money to pay for the broken toy.

Every Mothers duty is to teach honesty to their children.

Every Mothers duty is to teach cause and effect to their children.  If you break it, then you must pay for it!

RIGHT?

They went home, got a $5 bill from his piggy bank and took it to the store.  The broken toy was only $1 , so the clerk gave my GRANDson four $1 bills back.  His eyes light up...WOW!  This is great, I gave her one bill and she gave me 4 bills back!

Somehow the lesson was lost...

  1. This was a great lesson but I like his attitude (or understanding) of the $$ too funny

  3. I guess he will learn soon enough that more doesn't always mean more.
LOL... I bet his mom had to chuckle at that one.

  4. Oh, I couldn't help but laugh, Becky Jane! I could picture it clearly! Bless his little heart! He will learn soon enough, the difference between $4 and $5!!!
    Got a good laugh today!

  5. Yup..lol My son did that and he's 9 , so though he knows the money face value, if he sees 4 1's he'll take that over the 1 $5..

  7. ...and have you noticed that coins are even better! They would rather have 3 quarters over 3 $1 bills...

  8. Funny! I still remember stealing a small piece of candy from a grocery store- I must have been 3 or 4. When my mom found out, she marched me right back into that store, right up to a huge man who I thought was the boss (but, thinking back, he was rather pimply- probably just a teen stocking shelves, lol), and I had to admit to taking the candy and apologize! It was very traumatic. Needless to say, I have thought twice before ever stealing ANYTHING again! :) Following from vB's Members to Remember!

  9. Lol, that is so cute. I am sure he will learn in time the 5 is better. I agree with the coins my grandson knows the worth of a coin in a crane machine. His eyes light up when grandpa gives him a quarter.

  10. Mom's Heart, I stole my Dad's silver dollars and went to the corner market and bought candy. The shop owner called my Dad and asked if I was supposed to be using his silver dollar collection for candy...I was mortified!

  13. Tykes Mom, your comment gave me a good laugh! It would be great if they gave us more in return!

  14. LOL! Kids have the best responses. Poor Momma though I bet she was frustrated.

  15. Very funny, but interesting! At times, kids respond in such a way that we feel ashamed that we did not ponder much over it..:)

    Great going granny.. :)

  16. Love his little heart! Sorta reminds me of when our daughter was little and wanted something and we told her we couldn't afford it...her comeback was "well, just write a check"!! ;-)

  18. Such a sweet story! And reminder that even when we think we are the one teaching a lesson they are actually teaching us even if it is to just laugh a little and let go! 4 is more than 1 and in that alone it means he has learned something! :)

  19. :) oh, my goodness...wait until he understands math a little bit better and that he can get more stuff with money. But I still love his logic, I give 5 and get 4 back, awesome.
Hope you're doing alright this week,
