My Town

I live in a small country town.  We moved here so our kids would have plenty of room to run and have adventures!  Our small town has some funny characteristics...a personality all it's own!  Actually I think every town/city has it own personality that makes it unique.

You know you live in my town when:

  • You have lived in town for 12 years and still considered a new comer!
  • When your okay with a fly strip hanging in your kitchen. (our town has several dairies where the flies breed like flies)
  • The only rush hour we have is when church lets out!
  • You're driving down the road and 2 cars are stopped side by side with the occupants visiting with each other..........and instead of getting mad and honking your horn, you pull up behind them, get out, and start visiting too!
  • When the brightest street light is the moon
  • When you get your drinks at the fire station pop machine (we have no stores)

  •  The only reason you stay up late is to watch the sunset
  • The Town Days parade turns around and goes back the other way....and it still only lasts 15 minutes...
  • You pass horses on the road instead of cars
  • When you couldn't wait to get  back home so you can get away from it all!
  • When EVERYONE you pass by on the street waves back to you!  (My favorite!!!)

(These are actual submissions from folks that live in my town)

I'd enjoy hearing about any fun
characteristics your town/city has!

  1. What a fun post!! I love it! Oddly enough when I lived in Manhattan the thing that shocked my husband is how much of a small town feel our upper eastside neighborhood had. The stores knew our names, the coffee shop owner would say hi, you knew your neighbors, nothing like what you experince but more of it than you would think. I love our town now but very dirrerent, and very croweded!!! Thaks again for a wonderful post and a great glimpse of a wonderful way to live!!!

  4. @Kathy, I think it's great when special places in the big cities are able to keep their small town feel!

@Karen, You know it! Your welcome back anytime!

@Candida, another thing we have in common!

  5. That is a small community! It sounds great how everyone is so friendly. I don't think I'd like the flies though! Someday I'd love to live in a smallish town within driving distance of a bigger city. -Christine from Why We Love Green

  6. This sounds like the small town that I was raised in....I still wave in the city town and I wonder what they think?

  7. @Christine, I don't like the flies either. also, fortunately, we live just 10 minutes from the city.

@Kim, They probably love or think you're nuts...lol

  8. I am such a small town girl and loved hearing these sweet tidbits about your small town life. We now live in the "big city" but there will always be a friendly, simple, small town girl inside of me!

  9. I want to live where you live! These all sound heavenly to me (yes, including the fly strip, lol). I live in the middle of nowhere, but unfortunately, its not really a town. All the roads are 60 mph, the people are cliquey and the city folk from 30 minutes away use my area as a busy thru-way. I don't mean to complain because I do enjoy our home, but your town truly sounds wonderful. I'm going to slip into day-dreaming land now and imagine myself in a beautiful small town straight from a novel. :-) Thanks for sharing your small town characteristics!

  10. I was raised in Idaho, then moved to Southern California for 18 years. Now I'm in small town Western, PA. One thing I discovered through my moves is that I'm a small town girl at heart. I always have been, even though I denied it the entire time I lived in CA. I love the horse drawn carriages riding down the road. I love the small town parades and festivals. I love the small town ice cream shop walking distance from where I live. I love that in this small town, the majority are believers. I love that I can't go to the grocery store or take my kids to the playground without running into someone I know and could talk to for hours. Yep...I'm all small town. :)

    Blessings,

  12. I love living in a small town. It sounds like your town is a little smaller than mine, but I've lived here my entire life and couldn't imagine living anywhere else. There is just something to small town living, especially when raising a family.

    Love the pictures!

  14. Wow that is small. I would not know what to do with myself since I was raised were trees grow ut of concrete. Now that I have a little one I am kinda wanting that small town feel. Visiting you from the vB event :0)

  15. That sounds like a wonderful place to live! I am definitely not a city person (although live in one), and really love the feel of small, country towns - definitely feels like home:)
Your pictures are beautiful! Thanks for sharing,

  16. Reading this makes me miss home! Grew up visiting my grandparents farm daily. I WANT TO GO BACK! We live in a suburb now, but I long for the day we can pack up and move to the boonies! Visiting from vB.

  17. I live in a small town too. There's nothing quite like it. After college, I lived in a city for 5 years, but was itching to get out the entire time. One thing that is true in my town is that 1/2 the town is related to one another. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not so good. ;)

  18. Wow that really is a small town! I can't even imagine how different life would be living in a community like that, in both bad and good ways! I don't do well with feeling isolated, but the close-knit feeling sounds wonderful!

  20. I love small towns. I'm from Kauai which is much smaller than Oahu (the island I currently call home) and I always look forward to trips back home. I love how everyone just knows each other in small towns and the laid backness of it all. Great post and beautiful pics.

  21. Oh I am in tears. I crave this daily. I want a small town and need it to a point. I can remember the small horse town I grew up in till 8 oh how I loved it. The little main street and all the people who knew you by name. I ran from another small town that is part of my past and I can not believe I ever did. I have been talking to hubby and praying about it and I think we will be back to one soon! Oh I hope! Please continue to post pictures so I can pretend I live there. And if you ever feel like a pool and house near Disney we can switch for a week LOL

  22. We don't live in town. We live in the sticks. On a dirt road even! If someone doesn't wave at you then they are either a) rude or b) not from around here ;D

  24. My grandmother lives out in the country. We visit her on the weekends and stay with her. I enjoy "living" out there so much. It's so refreshing to meet people who care about the important things in life.

  25. These are so funny. My parents live in a small town in Northern Arizona, and it seems the same as yours, just different geography;)

  26. Too funny! I did grow up in a small town, but yours sounds smaller than mine. I now live in a town about the size, maybe a bit larger, so I'm still finding my place. I think what's really nice is its so friendly and no one makes reference that we're "the new people" - maybe they think that, but welcome us anyway!

  27. I'd like to live in a place like this.....but I'd never be able to move from Long Island! Maybe a vacation home, then I'd really be an out of towner FOREVER.
What a beautiful way to live.

  28. Traffic jam after church, I love it! We're still stuck here in Phoenix/Peoria/Glendale with populations over a gazillion. I'm dying out here. I need to come visit you and the fam, get away from it all :)

  29. What a different life experience! It sounds really nice, though I think I'd have a hard time adjusting. I think the thing that's most characteristic here in Denver is that everyone is pretty outdoorsy. I feel odd wearing fancy shoes when everyone is wearing flip-flops and hiking shoes. And they call children "Kiddos" which drives me nuts.

  30. Awww! Sounds wonderful. Love the one about not getting mad when people are in the road talking. Sounds like a wonderful pace in your town! Stopping by late from vB MTR!

  31. I love this. I also live in a small town but it's not quite as horse friendly as yours. Wish it was since I have one. There are so many nice things about living in a small town. It's has it's downfalls too but more positives than negatives. Great post.

  32. I grew up in a small town too & I miss it so much! No stoplights, no stores, heck we didn't even have a parade just good honest southern people. Thanks for bringing back some good memories for me today!
