Faith - 'A-ha'

Yesterday I was studying Lectures on Faith, and I had one of those 'A-ha' moments…a scripture I knew by heart suddenly jumped out at me and I gained a greater understanding of what it meant.

“Now faith is the substance [assurance]  of
things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen"'
(Hebrews 11:1).

"From this we learn that faith is the assurance
which men have of the existence of things which
they have not seen and that it is also the principle
of action in all intelligent beings."
(Lectures on Faith, Lecture 1, 1:9)

Faith is EVIDENCE.  Just as when we eat a potato chip, our taste buds give us the evidence that potato chips are salty. When we feel an ice cube, our nerve endings are the evidence that ice is cold. Our eyes are the evidence we use when we see a rainbow, we know it’s raining and sunny.  The list goes on and on.  We use our senses to give us the evidence we need to understand something better.

Faith then is the evidence we use to go to college knowing that if we study hard and do our part, we will get our degree and the possibility better job.  We plant seeds with the evidence of faith that the seed will grow. It’s all based on FAITH (the EVIDENCE of things not seen).
Faith is a form of EVIDENCE.  In a court room, tangible evidence is necessary to prove a person innocent or guilty. Faith is the same thing, only it is the EVIDENCE that something exists without us seeing it.

(I hope this made sense.  Putting into words the teachings from the Spirit is a difficult task!)

  1. You put it into words very well! My kids have just started in on the "how is it true if you can't see it, where's the proof" It's so hard to teach them about it! I like the two you wrote, about the rainbow and the seeds, the kids could grasp at that and I will use that the next time they ask! :)

  2. Isn't it great when scripture is alive and breathing for us?! I love how you can read the words with different applications every time seeing something new.
Thank you for sharing your A-ha moment with us :)

  4. Faith is a necessary but highly difficult thing to live by and possess. Actually, I think Faith possesses us rather than the other way around. It happens to one because I think it's something that you just can't 'convince' yourself to have. Thanks for giving me this reflective time!
