Our Cottage

Our blank canvas

 The sculpting begins

Returning to my past:

I grew up about 8 miles from here. Back in the olden days when I was just a little girl, this piece of land was a huge sugar beet farm.  It was owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Our church is really big on helping others in need and helping them help themselves.

The sugar beet farm was used to grow beets that were turned into sugar. The sugar was then shared with members who needed help. Our part of the deal was to thin and weed the beets.

This farm was literally acres big and to a little girl like me, it was ominous. The rows went on forever and ever.  I thinks it's pretty cool to be building on a piece of my own history.

I think of that little girl all dirty and discouraged...who would have thought she would one day return to build her dream house on the very spot she so long ago dreaded!

My sister shared a photo of the beet farm.  I'm not in it, but it shows members from our Ward (Congregation).

  2. That is why I really love the Mormon Church. They help their members. I am not Mormon, but if i was going to change...It would be to Mormon.

Can't wait to see your home as it progresses.

  8. I remember when I was a kid, growing up on the front range [east side of Colorado Rockies]...there were trains with a 'gazillion' bunch of cars carrying sugar beets to the sugar factory. What a sweet and acrid odor when it'd pass through town.

Amazing image and wonderful days of yore post. I like this kind...memories of youth both for you AND me.

  17. First off, I thought I recognized that landscape! I'm a Utah girl myself. Secondly, my grandmother was raised on the sugar beet farm too done in that part of the valley. How exciting and what an awesome backdrop you have for your new HOME!

  21. Becky, I totally miss that area of the country. The moment I looked at the first picture, I knew it was Utah! I could actually visualize myself driving from SLC airport on the 15 freeway headed for Idaho. Hopefully, if God decides to bless me with an answered prayer, I'll be making that drive sometime this summer after flying into the area to go visit my mom.

I'm so excited for you. I know how much fun it is to watch your beautiful home being built from the ground up. Praying everything will go smoothly and remain on schedule for you.

    Hugs from PA!
