Where's The Cheese Grater

Moving into a new home has it's challenges, but who would have thought that the cheese grater would be one of the biggest, and funniest challenge.

I expect to loose  my teenagers once in awhile, knowing they'll turn up when they're hungry or need money. I even expect to occassionally loose my husband when he comes across a good book to read. And, when my little doggy friend turns up missing, I know she'll be back wagging her tail and begging for attention... BUT to repeatedly loose the cheese grater is unacceptable.

I like a place for everything and eveything in it's place, (one of the side-effects of menopause, I'm sure.)  When I was designing my new kitchen, I knew where everything was going to be put.  The dishes are close to the sink, the baking items are in the bakers cabinets, refridgetator dishes next to the fridge and so on. I EVEN had a special place set aside for my cheese grater.

Admitedly,  my cheese grater is not the prettiest item in the kitchen, nor is it the most used, but when I need my cheese grater, I want to be able to FIND MY CHEESE GRATER.

...the most common phrase I hear coming from my kitchen is:

"Where's the cheese grater?"

I say it, CL says it, and the kids say it. And guess what...no one knows where it is. No one saw it last, no one used it last, and no one put it away after it was washed.

And, thus the search begins...I threaten everyone with their lives if they even dare leave the house until we find the missing item. We eventually find it in the knife drawer, or in the bread drawer, or even in the fridge....but NEVER in the place it's supposed to be! On a regular basis I'm laughing and shaking my head in amazement at the missing cheese grater phenomenon.

So, if you happen to find my cheese grater, please call me and I'll come pick it up.

I wonder if they make beepers for cheese graters...

  1. LOL..... I have a cheese grater and I know exactly where it should be. Usually it is there since I am the one who uses it, washes it and puts it away. I need a new one because mine is getting dull, but the ones they make today are pretty junky.....
Anyone know where I can buy a nice one?

  4. This is too cute!!! Guess what? I showed my hubby your idea for putting the door in the back of the island to get into that hard to reach cabinet...and he's planning on cutting a home into our 33 year old island and put a door in it!!! Thanks so much for such a wonderful idea!!! HOPE you have a great week!!!

  5. Lol, I know just what you are dealing with. Maybe they have an app for that. It would be nice to get on my phone and search for my favorite paring knife. I can never find it. Last time I could not find it it turned up in my husbands trunk. Of course I made him go out and buy me a new one.

  6. We just moved into a new house this past month with more cabinet space than I had before and I am still deciding where to put things...I recall the same thought with the cheese grater- and many other items I couldn't decide where to put. So many questions.. How often will I use it? How accessible does it need to be? Should it be near the serving ware or closer to the appliances? And then right when my husband thinks he knows where things are, I decide it needs a different home. I really need to do something about that because I'm driving us both nuts. :)

  7. LOL! Oh Becky, you are so funny! But I understand how frustrating it is to be looking for something you know it's supposed to be in its place! That's why I make sure that everyone who uses the kitchen are 'oriented' on the whereabouts of things so they can get it when they need it, and put it back when they're done!

    1. Roxi, If only my kids were...when we moved, I posted a chart in the kitchen that showed where everything was. Then I even posted a notice on the cupboard door where the cheese grater went because it kept getting 'lost'. But alas, I guess my delightful teenagers feel the need to express their individuallity by putting the cheese grater wherever they think is best. LOL

  8. Hope that your cheese grater turns up soon.. I think it needs a GPS tracker on it since it keeps on getting missing.

  9. We moved recently... it is pretty common for us to lose things still because they don't have their firm place. We have not lost the cheese grater, but we have lost plenty of other things. :)

  10. seriously I have often thought about hanging one of those key chain things that sound when you clap your hands on some things that I frequently mis- place.
Hope you find your cheee grater soon
