Cocoa Berry Detox Smoothie Recipe

I've got TWO treats for you today! First of all, here's my very own Cocoa Berry Detox Smoothie recipe. (This is a big deal for me, because I don't like to fix food; it's got to be easy and quick).

Here are a few reasons I chose these particular ingredients for my smoothie:

PLAIN YOGURT: Contains probiotics that aid in digestion. Make sure to use only yogurt with 'live, active cultures' and check the ingredient list to make sure no artificial ingredients have been added and definitely no added sugar. I used to make my own yogurt by the gallon when my kids were little. Now I use FAGE Greek Total Milk Yogurt.

#1 source of antioxidants. Also has significant amounts of magnesium, iron, manganese, and chromium. More importantly, as every woman knows, it increases your mood and energy.

BERRIES: Known for being a high antioxidant food, anti-inflammatory, high in fiber, vitamin C, plus more goodies! If using frozen or dried berries, check the ingredients to make sure no sugar has been added. Just because a package says 100% natural doesn't mean it's healthy. Special Note: When you combine cocoa and berries you increase the bodies ability to absorb the antioxidants two to three times. In other words, more of the good stuff makes it into your blood stream.

RAW HONEY: I love raw honey, it's my favorite sweetener and here's why - it's a complete food source, containing all the substances necessary to sustain life, (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and water). Pretty cool isn't it. Plus raw, unfiltered honey is the #1 natural enzyme source.

COCONUT OIL: Anti-viral, anti-fungal, and a necessary saturated fat for proper brain cell activity.

CEYLON CINNAMON: Not all cinnamon's are created equal. (This is a subject for another post.) Cinnamon is a good source for manganese, fiber, iron, and calcium. Aids in brain function, anti-inflammatory, plus more.

Cocoa Berry Detox Smoothie
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons raw cocoa powder
  • 2 types of berries equaling 3 cups total - frozen, fresh, or dried (for the smoothie in the photo, I used dried goji berries and frozen strawberries)
  • ¼ cup raw honey
  • 2 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon ceylon cinnamon pwd
Blend in Vitamix (or blender of your choice) for about 2 minutes or until smooth.
Makes about 4 cups.
Adjust ingredients to your own personal taste. Remember that no ONE food is a miracle cure, but a wise combination of nutrient rich foods will improve your overall health and wellness.
