Moving

As some of you know, we've had our house for sale.  Last November it went under contract. The buyers were having to wade through some loan approval stuff.  We weren't in any hurry so we waited for them to get qualified. Well, they're qualified! We sign the contract on Tuesday, February 28th and we MOVE out Saturday, March 3rd!  That is this Saturday! We only found out last Friday, that we'd be out of a home so soon!

Because of the rush factor in moving, I'll be absent for awhile! Hopefully I can check in once in a while and make sure your all doing okay!  Have a lovely week my dear friends and if you hear any strange screaming going on, it's just me letting off a little steam!  (We are very glad to have sold our house, just a little 'challenged' at the rush!)

My Dad, My Hero

My dad, Harold Gividen, was a young B-17 Bomber pilot during WWII.  I know for many of you, WWII seems so long ago, but I was raised hearing stories about the war from my dad.  I always felt so proud of him and the sacrifices he made for our freedom.

Tomorrow marks the day my father's B-17 Bomber airplane was shot down during WWII.  Below is a short write up about this event.

Smells From The Past

It was late at night and the road seemed to go on forever. We'd been driving for more than 2 days. The road before us seemed like an endless winding snake that just grew longer and longer. For a little girl just 7 years old, driving with my family in the old station-wagon was an adventure I relished, but after the first day of being stuck in a car, the adventure began to dwindle, anticipation at seeing my Grandpa and Grandma Cryer created a sense of urgency in my little heart.

I had just begun to doze off, when something caught my attention.  A familiar damp musty smell began creeping in.  It instantly brought back a flood of memories of being with my grandparents.  I knew we were getting close to their home.

I grew up in the desert where the air is dry, but my grandparents lived in the southern part of the United States, where the air hung damp and musty.  I loved that smell, because it was connected to 2 people dear to my heart.

My grandparents have long since passed away.  I'll probably never go back, but the smells from the past are a part of who I am.

I have a scarf kept in a special place in my bedroom closet. The scarf that was my mothers.  Whenever I get to missing her I can pull it out and smell her fragrance.  Memories of being home and surrounded by the love of my mother bring tears and laughter!

The smell of wet sidewalks remind me how precious rain is in the desert!

Johnson's Baby lotion brings back thoughts of soft, newborn babies

Homemade bread baking in the oven has a smell that speaks of safety and security...if there's bread in the oven, then there is food for my family!

Our 5 senses are closely connected to each other. For me, the sense of smell is so closely connected to my heart and the memories of days gone by. The past can become so vivid just by a passing, momentary scent!

Are there certain smells that pull memories from your heart?

Christian Women's Guest Post - Lori

Written by: Lori Fairchild

Eight years ago I sat in a doctor’s office after the birth of my second daughter, waiting for the doctor to tell us exactly what had caused my newborn baby girl’s birth defect. The words the doctor said in that office were life-altering to me as a mom. “Ninety-nine percent of babies with this particular defect are never born. They miscarry.”

Just so you know, my daughter is now a healthy, happy 8-year-old, but those words changed my life. It wasn’t until a couple of years later, when I had a 2- and a 4-year-old that I began to reflect on what those words meant. Every child is a miracle, but when someone looks you in the eye and tells you that the chances of your daughter being here are 1 percent, you start to wonder what exactly you’re supposed to do with the miracle you’ve been handed.

Those first two years of my second daughter’s life were mere survival. With two girls less than two years apart, it was all I could do to get everyone fed and bathed every day, much less contemplate my motherhood philosophy. But one day, I looked at my preschooler and my toddler – two little girls who are as different as two children can possibly be, and I thought, “What am I supposed to be doing?”

The answer came to me swift and sure.

“Teach them about Me,” God said.

“I’m trying, but I don’t have enough time in my day to add Bible lessons to it. Can’t you see I’m swamped just by the needs of my kids?”

“I give you the opportunities, you just have to use them,” He whispered.

In that moment, God revolutionized the way I viewed my role as a mom. My job was not to set aside separate time for Bible lessons. My job was to capture the moments that God gave me in our busy lives to teach my kids about Him.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 became my guiding verse: “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

God told the Israelites to teach their children as they walked. These people were wandering around in the desert. There wasn’t time for formal lessons with their kids. God wanted His people to talk about Him with their children all the time.

When I started to look for them, I discovered that teachable moments abound. A walk to the park can result in a conversation about God’s creation. A bump or a scrape leads to some discussion about God as a healer.  A visit to a friend with a new baby becomes fodder for talking about how Jesus came to earth as a baby.

Moments we can use to teach our kids about God happen every day. They are everyday moments. We simply have to be intentional in looking for them. Making God a part of your everyday conversations, your everyday moments, makes God a part of your family. It makes Him real and tangible for your kids.
And the great thing is that it’s never too late to start looking for those teachable moments to use with your kids. Whether your child is 1 or 21, God will give you teachable moments. All He asks is that you be available to use them.

Lori Fairchild is the writer of the Everyday Truth blog and Facebook page. She is a speaker and author who’s calling is to help parents find and capture those teachable everyday moments that God provides.

3 Simple Steps To Setting And Keeping Goals

It's been a month or so since we set our New Years Resolutions...How are you doing?  Last night our oldest son and his wife were over visiting and he started talking about how he has learned to set and keep goals.  He's got some pretty good ideas (must get his smarts from his MOM)!

  1. Set reasonable goals.  Make them so easy that it's not even hardly a challenge.

EXAMPLE #1:  Your goal is to get up 1 hour earlier every day.  That's a pretty hard goal, especially for someone that is not an early riser.

SOLUTION: Make it simple and build on it.

Start out by setting your alarm 5 minutes earlier than normal.
Anyone can get up just 5 minutes earlier!

Do this for 1 week.  The following week set your alarm another 5 minutes earlier. Now your getting up 10 minutes earlier than when you started. Do this for 1 week.  Keep adding 5 minutes each week until you've reached your 1 hour goal.

EXAMPLE #2: Your goal is to NEVER eat sugar again. Now, some people can do this in one fell swoop, but most of us will start out great until we're offered a piece of candy.

SOLUTION: Make it so simple that you can do it and then build on that.

Today I will not eat anything made with sugar.  Just today!

After you've succeeded, set the same goal for tomorrow and so on.  Once you've done this for 1 week, treat yourself to a small bowl of ice cream or something you really enjoy.  The following week, do the same thing.  Greet each day with the goal to not eat sugar...just one day at a time. After 1 week, treat yourself to a sweet treat. Do this for a month or so and then expand your commitment to 2 weeks and so on.  As your body begins to adjust to not having sugar, you'll begin to notice that those sweet treats don't taste as good and they won't be such a temptation.

     2.  Fill the void. Once a person decides to stop doing something, a void is created.  Take the above Example #2.  You've created a void by taking something you like to eat out of your diet.  In order to succeed at your goal, NOT to eat sugar, you will need to fill that void with something else.  Something equally satisfying.  Maybe you love strawberries but don't buy them very often....buy yourself some strawberries and save them for a treat when temptation is sneaking in!

     3.  Remove temptation.  If your goal is to get up earlier, make sure to go to bed on time.  Remove the temptation to sleep in by getting a good nights rest.  If your goal is to not eat sugar, remove all those sugar laiden treats from the house.  That way, when you do treat yourself, you have to go to the store to buy it!  But...make sure you've had a good healthy meal before buying your treat, or the temptation to buy several treats  might be to strong...

Do you have any tips about what works for you?  I'd enjoy hearing about them!

The TP Battle

I'm really big on having a years supply of food on hand in case of an emergency or unemployment. In the past, this food supply has helped our family and others.

Along with food, there are a few things that I DO NOT  want to be without.  One of them is toilet paper.  I can do without a lot of things, but toilet paper is one thing that I want to make sure I have plenty on hand. Going out in the yard and picking leaves is not my idea of fun!  Especially in the winter when there are NO leaves...

Now that y'all know how important toilet paper is to me, I'd like to share with you one of my worst pet-peeves about TP!  I imagine most of you have had a similar experience...you get a new roll out, get it started, pull off a section only to find out that the 2 ply roll is off sync...you know, when the top layer is about a inch shorter than the bottom layer!

What silly little things bring out the worst in you???

Christian Women's Guest Post - Marie

(with their permission, I am re-posting it for you to enjoy! I invite you to stop by Standing For Something and leave a comment letting her know you're visiting from rise Above Your Limits)

BELIEVING THE PROPHET, JOSEPH SMITH

I said goodbye to my Mom, boyfriend and best friend and never looked back.  I had just entered the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah where the over 60,000 missionaries all over the world train before serving.  My life changed the minute I walked in the building and handed over my luggage and received my dork dot (a little red sticker saying signifying you were NEW).  I left my familiar life to be cradled by the spirit that envelops you when you are about the service of our Heavenly Father.  I was given my missionary tag, scriptures, class schedule and dorm room assignment.  I was now a missionary.  I was official.
The weeks passed of 10 hours a day of classes, endless trips to the cafeteria and lifelong friendships based on fear of the unknown…and spiritual bonding.  It was spiritual boot camp.  And there were some days when I think real boot camp might have been easier.
I was about a month from my departure date when I remember fear setting in.  Did I really believe all of this was true?  Would the simple testimony of my youth based on girls camp experiences, youth conferences and primary lessons allow me to teach a stranger the gospel??  I panicked.  I prayed.  And then I prayed again, hard.  I remember walking around the MTC like a zombie; wondering if should even be there.  I was afraid if someone made direct eye contact with me, they would know I was hanging by a thread, and a possible fraud of a missionary.
That night our teacher was having a hard time getting us to settle down.  After studying all day and trying to speak another language we were a bit “hyper” to say the least.  He took us out of class and found a quiet classroom that had a piano.  We sat down and he told us that he was going to play some hymns that would bring the spirit into our little group.
We sang, “I am a Child of God” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” and then “A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief.”  Before our teacher played the last hymn, he told us that this hymn was sung to Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum on the night they were martyred by the Apostle, John Taylor:
A poor, wayfaring Man of grief
Hath often crossed me on my way,
Who sued so humbly for relief
That I could never answer nay.
I had not pow’r to ask his name,
Whereto he went, or whence he came;
Yet there was something in his eye
That won my love; I knew not why.
My head hung heavy after the hymn was over.  Tears fell down my cheeks and chin and made there way to my black missionary tag.  My tag had my name and the name of Jesus Christ on it.  I represented him for the next few years and I would do it with honor.  I couldn’t speak.  I couldn’t look up.  My simple prayer to know if what I was teaching was true was answered in that hymn.  Not the words, but the spirit confirming to me that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and that the Church was true.
The First Vision, courtesy JosephSmith.net
I never forgot that day as I entered into the mission field.  And after having the privilege of serving our Heavenly Father in New York City, the spirit of truth confirmed to all who would listen the truthfulness of the Joseph Smith story (excerpt):
On a spring day in 1820, 14-year-old Joseph Smith sought solitude in a grove of trees and prayed to know which church was true. God the Father and Jesus Christ, “two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description,” appeared and spoke with him by name.
Wondering which of the many churches to join, Joseph had followed the counsel in the Bible’s book of James: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” The Lord told Joseph “that all the religious denominations were believing in incorrect doctrines” and that he was to await further instructions from on high.  ”In a state of calmness and peace indescribable,” Joseph left that sacred grove knowing the reality of our Father in Heaven and His resurrected Son, Jesus Christ.
Whether this story was taught to someone affluent or lived in the projects the spirit confirmed the truth just the same, each and every time.  It didn’t matter where we were, and this little story shows just that.
“Run Down Shack in Pultusk” by Maciomhair
My missionary companion and I spent our day walking through an area of Long Island that had been tracted many times over.  We felt like two people with their feet stuck in the mud.  Everyone had heard or seen missionaries…and no one was interested in our message.  But still we went on, knocking on house after house…rejection after rejection.  We attempted to laugh our way through day since laughter made our heavy hearts feel lighter.  We knocked on a rather strange looking house that was essentially falling down.  It looked abandoned.  The front porch was full of boards barely nailed together and we weren’t quite sure which door to knock on, since there were two of them.  We knocked and knocked.  Finally a young man came out of the house and kindly asked us what we wanted.  We said we were missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and asked if he had heard of us.  He nodded.  We asked if we could share our message about the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith.  He agreed but because the house had quite a few occupants we needed to teach him out on the front porch.
In our broken Spanish we told him about the nature of God, Jesus Christ and about prophets.  It was my turn to share the story of the First Vision, and I looked down at my missionary discussion to make sure I said everything correctly.  As I told the account of Joseph Smith and how he had seen God the Eternal Father and Jesus Christ…it was silent.  Not just quiet…but a silence that enveloped the three of us.  The young man stared at us with eyes wide and spirit touched, he knew what we knew.   That what we had told him was true.
This was one of a few beautiful experiences I’ve had teaching the Joseph Smith story.  I am grateful for it, for it is the grounding of my testimony.  And the best part is that anyone can know if Joseph Smith was a prophet for themselves whether you are a missionary in a foreign land, falling down house or kneeling down by your bed.   Your prayers will be answered.

My Memories Suite Review and G!VEAWAY

When My Memories Suite contacted me about doing a review and G!VEAWAY for them I was a bit hesitant.  I am not a scrap booker in any sense of the word.  In fact, I've avoided scrap booking like I've avoided getting the black plague!

WOW! Has it been fun!

This was made using one of their templates and adding a few embellishments!

I must admit, this one was super fun to make for
my daughter and granddaughter

...I can't forget my little furry friend...I made this one from scratch, adding everything myself with their vast assortment of STUFF that came free with their digital scrap booking software.
(I like things simple and uncluttered)

Christian Women's Guest Post - Faith Savin

Faith Savin
The reason I called this Faith savings is because, I am a Christian and I totally believe... without God in my life, everything would not be complete when it comes to our budget and life in general. Being a stay at home Mom can be hard sometimes, heck being a Mom in general can be. Running the kids, cleaning house, doing the bills and everything else we do can be really stressful but, it can also be a blessing (If we let it be).

I know when I feel down about finances and the stresses of life, I always remind myself, "With God all things are possible" I'm sure a lot of you have already heard that verse. Number two...when you are feeling stressed/depressed, my Pastor says, "Do not make time for it." Finances can be a big stress on us.

Now how does God come into all of this? If you put God first in your life, everything else will fall together. Trust in him, listen to him and start taking control today. Quit letting the stresses of life alter what you truly need to be doing. It's time to set your priorities.

Here is what I believe in order, that our life needs to be complete.

1. God
2. Family
3. Church
4. Finances
5. Friends
6. Fun

Putting God first makes everything else work!

I'd Rather Be Righteous Than Right

The Lord rewards every man for his righteousness and faithfulness.
1 Samuel 26:23

Occasionally my teenagers want help with their math homework. I try not to act too excited but secretly I'm doing the happy dance. There is something so gratifying to me about a good Algebra problem. A few substitutions and manipulations then...voila you get the right answer. I just LOVE it when I'm right!

Truth be told I like to be right in other areas of my life as well.

Like when I share droplets of wisdom with my husband that he rejects but they turn out to be pearls.

Or when I offer my best mommy warning just prior to my kids disobeying and reaping the natural consequence.

This morning I wonder though do I really want to be right or do I want to be righteous.

I would rather honor my husband with my actions and words than win an argument.

I delight when I see obedience in my children so much more than saying, "I told you so."

To be righteous is to have a right standing with God and men. It is cultivating the long-term yield instead of close relationship instead of the short-term satisfaction of "right". Today I choose to righteous instead of right.

Alzheimer's Service Missionary

Some of you may already know that I have recently been called to be a Service Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  My specific area for service is helping the local Alzheimer's Association.  One of my main areas of focus is helping people learn how to care for themselves while being a Caregiver for a loved one with Alzheimer's or related illnesses.

Some of the main concerns Caregivers have are:

 Information about available resources
Financial solutions
 Communicating with professionals
 Disease specific information
 Recruiting competent help
Learning care tasks
How to communicate with persons with dementia
     Legal advice

As a volunteer Service Missionary, I will be helping Caregivers learn about these areas of concern.  Since I'm just starting out, I'm not sure exactly how, what, or when I'll be helping, but I'm being trained and will be glad to serve wherever needed!

Ali, from Standing For Something invited me to do an article about being a Service Missionary and the Alzheimer's Association.  I invite you to visit her site and let her know you're visiting from Rise Above Your Limits..... HERE is a direct link to my article.  I'm so thankful to Ali sharing for this with her readers.

One of my goals is to write informative Alzheimer's articles for my blog and also for wikiMommy.com.  Often Mommy's find themselves being Caregivers to their own Mommy's and Daddy's.  I want to be able to help ease their burden by sharing and teaching them ways to care for themselves while caring for their parents.
